What exactly is happy, anyway? Is it an emotion we experience when we smile? When we share goodwill toward all men and women? When we do a good thing and it shows on our faces? Or when we simply glow from the inside out?
I’m going to share a little bit about myself before I get into the how you can become happy spiel. For starters, I won’t say I was an unhappy person before I changed. I got excited at times, I smiled when something sparked me as funny or cute. I grumbled when things didn’t go my way. But mostly I hummed along like most people do. To put it bluntly, I was indifferent.
And then I met a person who smiles constantly, laughs a lot, wakes up in the morning singing, and is generally happy. I spend a lot of time with this person and his attitude toward life changed mine. Now I smile a lot more than I used to, I laugh more often, I sing now just as much as I did when I was young—a habit I was shamed out of. Don’t let this happen to you or your kids. Singing is a sign of inner joy, no matter what it sounds like.
I am happy.
Not just because I spend time with a happy person, but because I learned not to spend time with unhappy people. In short, be mindful of the people in your orbit. Some folks contribute to the good feelings that we want to foster in ourselves and some people sap all the joy out of living. Maybe you want to help your joyless friend or family member see that life is good and you’re trying to win them over from the dark side. But in the meantime, they’re emotionally exhausting.
Do yourself a favor and give emotional vampires a vacation from your goodwill and while you’re at it, smile for yourself, sing for yourself as loud and as often and you can. Foster your own joy and be happy becoming happy.
But! If you are the emotional vampire, here are a few things you can do to avoid succumbing to the evil emperor of doom and dismay:
I hope this post helps at least one person because fundamentally above and beyond everything else, life is good. No matter your past, no matter what happened yesterday or what you may be afraid of tomorrow, NOW is a gift to you and you must make your very best effort not to waste it. Smile and be happy within the good feelings you were born with. And if no one has told you, you are worthy of a good life. Go forth and Be Happy!
Be well and Remember: Always to take time to water your own garden.
